Economic Freedom – Mauritius climbs into the top 10

According to the Economic Freedom of the World 2022 Annual report (the ‘report’) published by the Frazer Institute, Mauritius leapfrogged from its 11th position in 2021 to the 9th position in 2022, hence joining the top 10 countries most favourable to economic freedom. The report shows that Mauritius sustained its first position as being the most-economically free country in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The analysis of a country’s economic freedom in based on five main areas, namely;

  1. The size of Government
  2. The Legal System and Property Rights
  3. Sound Money
  4. Freedom to Trade Independently
  5. Regulation of credit, labour and business

The top 10 countries for 2022 are Hong Kong, Singapore, Switzerland, New Zealand, Denmark, Australia, United States, Estonia, Mauritius and Ireland.
